Born on 25th November 1954
in the Kollam district of Kerala, Mr. Kalamandalam Rajasekharan
was first introduced to the dance-drama of Kathakali at the tender
age of 12. During this time, he received exceptional tutelage under
the eminent maestros, Karthikapilly Kuttapanicker and Oyoor Kochugovinda
Pillai. In 1969, he joined Kerala Kalamandalam as a student and
learnt Kathakali under Madavoor Vasudevan Nair, one of the leading
connoisseurs of this age-old dance form. After having completed
his Diploma and Post Diploma in Kathakali from Kerala Kalamandalam,
he became a full-fledged Kathakali artiste.
Mr. Kalamandalam Rajasekharan has
been a Kathakali artiste for the last 35 years. He has done his
specialization in female roles in Kathakali. An accomplished Kathakali
artiste; he has been teaching the dance form at the Kerala Kalamandalam
for the past 25 years. Presently, he is the Professor and Head of
the Faculty of Kathakali (Southern School). Mr. Kalamandalam Rajasekharan
has toured outside India twenty-eight times for Kathakali performances
and lecture demonstrations. He has extensively toured Europe, England,
Canada, The United States, Australia, Hong Kong, Japan, Iran etc
and Asian countries such as Taiwan, Thailand etc; as member of the
Kalamandalam Kathakali troupe as well as independently. He has also
conducted Kathakali workshops in the theatre departments of several
foreign universities.
